Just Marilyn

Marilyn Monroe Nail Art

Some Marilyn Monroe inspired nail art for you all today. :)  This Andy Warhol-style design just requires some basic stamping and a lot of bright colored nail polish.

Marilyn Monroe Stamping PlateI received the Marilyn Monroe stamping plate from Born Pretty Store in exchange for an honest review.  I wanted this plate specifically for the Marilyn image, and knew right away I wanted to do a colorful Andy Warhol inspired look.  Because there is so much flat space (the area around her), you definitely need either stamping polish, or really good normal polish that stamps well for this to work.  I had to re-do a couple nails.  Also, be very gentle when scraping off the excess polish before stamping.  Because of all that flat space, it is easy to scrape off too much polish.  But once you get used to the functionality, this is a great plate.  I think next I want to try a black and white version of Marilyn, then incorporate some of the swirly designs that are also on the plate.

Nail Polish

I was trying to use all Sally Hansen polishes since I got so many in the mail the other day for my prize pack (see my Instagram account @lhy33).  But even with the literal hundreds of polishes I own, I still just don't have every color.  Ugh.  So I had to use two non-Sally Hansen polishes.  They are great polishes...they just ruined my "all Sally Hansen" plan.  On another note...if you haven't tried the Insta-Dri polishes, I highly suggest them.  I LOVE nail polish, but waiting for it to dry is a pain.  Especially for nail art purposes.  But these dry in no time, so you can get on with your life and finish those nails faster. :)

Polish Used:
  • Sally Hansen Insta-Dri - Fast Lane
  • Sally Hansen Insta-Dri - Re-teal Therapy
  • Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear - Breezy Blue
  • Gap - Midnight Purple
  • Sally Hansen Insta-Dri - Cruisin'
  • Bundle Monster Stamping Lacquer - Royal Blue
  • Sally Hansen Insta-Dri - Lightening
  • Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear - Posh Plum
  • Base and top coats
Other Supplies:

This design only uses basic stamping, but as I mentioned above, even that can be slightly more difficult due to the amount of flat space on this design.  My index finger nail has a downward curve to the tip, so you'll see that one didn't get fully stamped.  Although I kind of like how it looks that way.  To create this look:
  1. Apply the base colors - thumb in Posh Plum, index in Fast Lane, middle in Breezy Blue, ring in Cruisin', and pinky in Lightening.  You'll want light colors for the base so you can stamp the darker color on top.  If you have awesome light colored stamping polishes, you could also do the reverse though with a dark base and light stamping.

  2. Stamp Marilyn on each nail in different colors.  Re-teal Therapy on the index, Midnight Purple on the middle, Royal Blue on the ring, and Posh Plum on the pinky.  I used contrasting colors to make it pop and look more like the Andy Warhol style.  You could do full on Andy Warhol and also paint different color eyeshadow and lips on each one.  But I wanted to keep this first attempt pretty basic.
  3. Optional: Add a stud or embellishment to the base of the thumb.  Or write Marilyn across the nail.  I just left mine plain to go with the pop art feel.
