Be Brave

Divergent Nail Art

Be brave.  Dauntless is one of the five factions in the world of Divergent by Veronica Roth.  They are the soldiers, they wear all black, are tattooed and pierced, and they believe in courage, bravery, and fearlessness.  It's my favorite of the factions, so I created these nails in honor of them.

If you haven't read Divergent, I highly suggest it.  The movie version comes out on DVD today, but the books are better.

Nail Polish
Polish Used:
  • Wet n Wild - Black Crème
  • Ulta - Rhinestone Rocker
  • Maybelline Color Show Brocades - Black in Mirrors
  • Miss Kiss - Chrome Crazy
  • Sinful Colors - Queen of Beauty
Other Supplies:
  • Nail art brush
  • 2mm round silver studs
  • Base and top coats

For me, the hardest part of this nail was the lettering.  I don't have great handwriting to begin with, so painting it is definitely a challenge.  But if you have a steady hand and good spatial reasoning, it can be done.  Here's how to create the look:
  1. Apply the base colors.  Thumb, index, and middle in Black Crème.  Ring in Rhinestone Rocker.  And pinky in Black in Mirrors.
  2. Thumb: Apply a couple coats of Queen of Beauty.
  3. Index: The flames within the circle is the Dauntless symbol.  Using a nail brush, paint a silver circle with Miss Kiss. Once dry, paint black flames.  You can either paint the black flames so it leaves the silver space in the middle, or you can go back with silver polish.
  4. Middle: "BE BRAVE."  This is the dauntless motto.  "BRAVE" has five letters, so paint the "A" first since it is the middle letter.  That way the words will be centered.
  5. Ring: Apply a line of 2mm silver round studs down the middle of the nail.  Seal these on with a few coats of clear top coat.
