Hulk Smash

Hulk Nail Art

Today is International Nail Art Day! #INAD  This called for something EPIC.  I give you, The Incredible Hulk!  I based the design off of some promo pics for The Incredible Hulk 2 movie.  I stuck with the green and black look, but added a purple stud to my pinky as a nod to the comic book version.

On a movie note, I'm sad Edward Norton didn't keep the role of Hulk for the Avengers movies.  I think he matched the best for what Bruce Banner looked like in the comics.

Nail Polish
Polish Used:
  • Piggy Polish - Sub-Lime
  • Wet n Wild - Black Crème
  • Bundle Monster - Angelic White
Other Supplies:
  • Nail art brush
  • 3mm round purple stud
  • Make-up sponge
  • Base and top coat

This is a pretty advanced design since it is all free-hand painting.  But if you're up to the challenge, here's how to create the look:
  1. Apply a base coat of Sub-Lime.  It is a bright green that is perfect for Hulk's coloring.  You'll need 2-3 coats on each nail.  Note: This color will stain your nails.  A clear base coat is highly recommended.  You might even want to paint a coat of white polish first to help decrease staining.
  2. Apply a green and black gradient to the index and ring finger.  To do this, wet a make-up sponge and paint a stripe of green and a stripe of black next to each other, then dab on the nail.  See Sunset Dreams for more detail.
  3. Paint Hulk's eye.
    • Hulk's Eye
    • First, using a small nail art brush, paint the white oval shape of the eyeball in the middle of the nail.  I have shorter nails, so I painted it a little closer to the base of my nail so I'd have more room for his eyebrow.
    • Next, paint all the black details.  Paint a large black circle in the white of the eye to represent the iris, and a thick black curved line for the eyebrow.  Add some thin lining around the eye, and some wrinkles above and below the eye.  For shadowing, water down a drop of black polish on a piece of wax paper, then shade in between his eyes and under the brow.
    • Finally, paint in the green of his iris.  Remember to leave a circle of black in the center for the pupil, and leave a rim of black on the outer edge.  Add a white highlight mark to the left of the pupil.
  4. Paint the "HULK" word nail.
    • Hulk Letters
    • Using black polish and a nail brush, paint two parallel lines to block off the top and the bottom of the letters.  Paint in the top and the bottom sections above and below the letters with black.
    • Next, paint three vertical lines to separate the letters.
    • Turn each segmented rectangle into a letter.
    • Use white polish to add some highlights to the bottoms of the letters.
  5. Apply a purple stud on the base of the pinky nail, and secure with a few coats of clear top coat.
