That's How I Roll

Sushi Nail Art

Sushi Nails!!!  I originally created these nails for my "fish theme" entry for Nail It! Magazine.  For each issue, they post three themes and ask readers to submit designs.  If you love nail art, I highly suggest subscribing to this magazine.  It is full of inspiring designs, and great tips and tricks. #nailart

I decided to do sushi as my version of "fish" because I LOVE sushi and it's made with fish.  I figured it would be different, making my mani stand out and giving me a better chance at getting in the magazine.  It worked!  In the July/August 2014 issue out now, my sushi nail art can be seen on page 63.

If you want to submit designs for future issues, check out their website for more information.  Currently, they are accepting submissions with "Holiday," "Autumn," and "Feathers," themes for the November/December 2014 issue.

Nail Polish
Polish Used:
  • Essence - Sweet as Candy
  • Maybelline New York Color Show Nail Lacquer - Pink Shock
  • Wild and Crazy - Renatka
  • Wet N Wild Wild Shine Nail Color - Sunny Side Up
  • Ulta - Sun-Sational
  • Sally Hansen Hard as Nails Xtreme Wear - Green with Envy
  • Sinful Colors - Show Me The Way
  • Ulta - On Taupe of the World
  • Wet n Wild Wild Shine Nail Color - French White Crème
  • Wet N Wild Shine Nail Color - Black Crème
Other Supplies:
  • Nail brush
  • Dotting tool
  • Base and top coats

Here's how to create this look:
  1. Apply the base colors.  Thumb to pinky: black, light pink, taupe, yellow and green.
  2. Thumb: Add a coat of Show Me the Way on top the black polish on the thumb.  This give it a greenish tint that looks more like seaweed.  Then, paint white circles to create the sushi.  Add some pink, green, and yellow shapes to represent the insides of the center of the roll.
  3. Index: Use a dotting tool and dark orange polish to create the look of fish eggs.  Swipe black polish across the tip to represent the seaweed.  Again, coat with Show Me the Way.  Use the dotting tool with a lighter orange to add some highlights to the eggs.
  4. Middle: Paint a large white oval across the tip.  The top half will be coated with light pink, and shadowed with dark pink to represent a shrimp.  The bottom half stays white for the rice.  Paint a black stripe down the center for the seaweed, and coat it with Show Me the Way.
  5. Ring: Paint a black half circle across the tip.  Use a dotting tool with white polish to fill in the center of the circle to look like rice.  Then, paint a pink and green square in the center.
  6. Pinky: Paint a rounded triangle with white paint across the tip.  Add a small black square on the top of the triangle, and add Show Me the Way to make it greenish.
